At the Cu Chi Tunnels, most visitors feel a sense of curiosity and excitement when guided into the secret tunnels, especially when attempting to 'crawl underground' through the tiny, brick-lined passages.
Vincent Reed, a tourist from Ireland, remarked that the Cu Chi Tunnels are not only a place for those interested in learning about the heroic history of the local military and civilians during the American War but also an ideal spot for relaxation, thanks to its lush, fresh, and peaceful surroundings.
“My foreign friends had visited the Cu Chi Tunnels and had a very positive impression of the place. They inspired and urged me to come here once. After listening to the guide's presentation, I was truly impressed and moved by the brave and resourceful fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people.
At the tunnels, I got to try shooting a gun, crawl into a tiny tunnel, and eat delicious cassava (khoai mì). I hope this destination becomes even more widely known, so that future generations of Vietnamese people and international visitors have the opportunity to explore and experience it,” the Irish visitor shared.
Beyond the tunnel experience, visitors are also introduced to the Hoang Cam kitchen and can savor boiled cassava (khoai mì) with sesame salt – a staple food for the soldiers and people of Cu Chi during challenging times. Tourists also eagerly participate in activities like disassembling and assembling guns, playing simulated battles with paintball guns, and engaging in defense sports shooting, among others.
This also serves as an ideal picnic spot for visitors, offering fresh air, a peaceful escape from the city, and a variety of unique activities such as cycling, swimming, camping, dining, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, or exploring local cuisine.

Representatives from many tour operators believe that the Cu Chi Tunnels are not just a historical relic but also a unique intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam, truly deserving of World Heritage status.
To promote the values and significance of this destination and to increase its recognition among international tourists, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports (VH&TT) recently submitted a proposal to the City People's Committee. This proposal outlines the completion of a summary report on the Cu Chi Tunnels and clarifies certain points with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism regarding its submission to UNESCO for inclusion in the tentative list for World Heritage nomination.
The Cu Chi Tunnels served as a resistance base, featuring a robust underground defense system with tunnels stretching up to 200 km, reaching depths of 3-12m, and comprising 12 intricate, complex, and mysterious layers. These tunnels were fully equipped for living and fighting, capable of withstanding the destructive power of modern warfare at the time.
The Cu Chi Tunnels were once voted among the Top 25 iconic Asian destinations by users of TripAdvisor, a globally popular and reputable travel app (in 2017). In 2018, they were listed among the top 7 famous tunnel tours worldwide by Hong Kong's South China Morning Post and were also featured by CNN as one of the world's top underground destinations.
Currently, the cultural sector is processing the necessary procedures to submit the Cu Chi Tunnels for UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
